Oh My Darlin’ Mary Darling (52 Ancestors #19)

How can you not like an ancestor named Mary Darling? My 4th-great-grandmother was born in 1770 in Scotland. On 3 June 1796, she married John Young in Crichton, Midlothian, Scotland.

Mary and John moved to Washington County, Ohio. They are enumerated there in 1850. Mary died 11 March 1855 and is buried in Lynch Cemetery in Fearing Township.

It would be interesting to research the Scottish migration into southeast Ohio. Goodness knows there’s a lot of them!

I too am descended from Scottish Darlings. In fact, it is the primary reason that I began research because of a family story regarding the 19th century English heroine, Grace. Her story is *still* taught as part of the school curriculum, so it’s probably worth a look. Her museum is occasionally mentioned in the press, which is nice. Anyway, although I do indeed have several Grace Darling ancestors, I never proved, categorically, the connection with that one, primarily because of the dearth of accurately transcribed records covering the key period in time in Scotland i.e. the end of the 18th century when the Scot Darling’s migrated to the Northumberland coast. As you appear to have an interest in this line, I wonder whether you have ever found a good data source?

        Regards
        Mike

I haven’t explored the Darlings too much, outside of what I have found in the parish records for John and Mary. I’ll have to take a look, as I seem to recall a reference to Northumberland somewhere, but I can’t remember if that was regarding the Darlings or the Douglasses (John and Mary’s daughter-in-law Jane Douglass).
