   Came across an article about Great Aunt Agnes and how she celebrated Christmas in 1870 as a child in Wisconsin. It goes on to mention how she celebrated with her child in the 1890s and how she was going to celebrate this year-1965.

   I first shared my GEDCOM file online on St. Nicholas Day in 2002 and am reminded every St. Nick’s day of the family and friends who have helped me along the way, researcher all my ancestors.

      This is one week, I did not have a certain family or ancestor to feature…or much time to give in the way I would liked to have on the holidays theme. This is also one time that I wished I had a blog!

      I shared the memory that my mother served our Thanksgiving dinners using serving dishes and utensils that once belonged to other women in the family – both grandmothers, great grandmothers, great great grandmothers, 3 generations of aunts, etc. How wonderful it was to pass around a dish that had once graced the tables when my parents were children…or even when my grandparents were children!

      And second that we celebrate our immigrant ancestors and the countries from which they came during Christmas/New Year’s with our adoption of a holiday tradtion or two from each country – enriching our own traditions that have grown up here among our families in America.

   This week I made up my own theme: “Saudade” in the sense of a terrible longing for absent family, something made even more poignant with the approaching holidays. My Norwegian/American great grandmother Anna Elton would be no stranger to this emotion throughout her life.

   I continued with the “Thankful” theme in honor of a 4th great-grandmother named Thankful Chapin who married her third cousin once removed, another Chapin.

    ORRICK, Benjamin Orrick was my paternal great-great-uncle who decided to marry Medora Frances WHITE on Christmas day in 1870 in White Rock Arkansas where her family was living. The couple raised 8 children, mainly in Crawford County AR, with a brief sojourn in OK. They celebrated 46 Christmas Day anniversaries together.
