Recently, GenealogyInTime put together their annual “state of the genealogy industry” stats, with the “Top 100 Genealogy Websites.” I have to admit that, while I tend to be a numbers geek, it can be a lot to wade through. Crestleaf took GenealogyInTime’s data and made an infographic out of it. Take a look:
Anything surprising to you?
I am amazed how little the percentage of traffic is for the major genealogical sites, what are the other sites that people are going to?
Are you referring to the top 10 sites getting 42% of the genealogy traffic? That sounds about right to me (if not a little bit high). There are countless genealogy sites out there. Linkpendium has over 10 million genealogy links on its site. That’s a lot of sites. They may not get the mega traffic of the Top 10, but in sheer number of sites, they’re going to make an impact on the total.
Genealogy.com, owned by Ancestry.com, has been shut down except for its forums, which are now read-only. The hosted trees and family websites, as well as the limited databases, are inaccessible.
True. However, that didn’t occur until September, giving them 9 months to rack up the traffic. GenealogyInTime has links to its methodology for ranking here. It will be interesting to see what site takes genealogy.com’s place in the top 5 next year.
