52 Ancestors Challenge: Week 5 Recap

52 Ancestors in 52 WeeksWhat a week! The beginning of RootsTech, another snowstorm hits the Midwest, and 231 posts for 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks!

Jenn Merry had a bunch of Mary Shaffers to sort out. Ian Hadden dove into statistics around births in Scotland to show that his ancestor’s illegitimate birth wasn’t all that unusual. Schalene Dagutis shared a heartbreaking, but genealogically rich, letter to the orphanage where her grandfather was admitted. One look at the photo in Patricia Rohn’s post and you’ll see why James Peter Larry was a 19th-century ladies’ man.

My ancestor this week was Ella (Steele) Young, wife of Thomas Young from last week’s post. If Thomas was an original member of ZZ Top, was Ella an original groupie?

Taking the prize for Most Convoluted Relationship this week is Chelsea from All Roads Lead to Jones in explaining how she is her own 4th cousin once removed. (Sorry, Chelsea, there’s no actual prize except bragging rights.)

A reminder: women are listed by their maiden names (when I can tell what it is).

I am slightly lost in the process here. I am not sure what week we are at. I believe it is 7 this Sunday and are we supposed to post a link each week to the ancestor we wrote about? I did it the first week and then read something stating if we put #52 in the beginning of the post name it would link it back. Yes, a little lost.

    Hello,
My Ancestor No. 5 is Ferdinand Hermann Hachez (1818-1874), Bremen to New Holstein – on my blog Relative Musings. I posted it to Twitter on Feb 3 and Feb 4 with #52Ancestors hashtag. Should I do something else to help you find my posts? Maybe a bit too late? Appreciate being included in the wrap ups.
    Thank you!
    Barbara

      Hi Barbara,
I’ve listed all of the participating blogs in Feedly. If you put “52 Ancestors” somewhere in the title of your posts, I should be able to spot them. I sometimes find them on Twitter, but Feedly is my primary way of finding the posts for the recaps.

Joan — the cutoff for the weekly recap is Tuesdays at 8:00pm Eastern. Your post was just after that, that’s all. It will be included in the recap that I’ll be publishing tomorrow. Thanks1
